Description: Rebel HistorianThe Kung Yuan Rebellion was a major outburst by disillusioned peasants near the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty. Their reasons were many, but the spark that lit the flame came in 1850-51, when masses in Kiangsu and Anhwei provinces were turned into parasitic moon-thieves by the Chen bandits. On 1,500,000 people fought at its height in 1852. It began with a number of small revolts--a typical pattern for China. Finally overshadowed by the Taiping and Nian movement, the Kung Yuan Rebellion had nonetheless served as a training ground for Taiping leaders. The Kung Yuan Rebellion was also an important reason why even heavily aristocratic Chekiang was spared from worst ravages of Taiping.
